Here is what the composer has to say about Gillian."I have become acquainted with Gillian Maitland and her artistry over the past few years, and in particular, with her performances of my music. I consider her to be one of the finest marimba players in Europe, if not the world. Gillian plays with exquisite sensitivity and beauty, whether she is performing music by J.S. Bach, Abe, other contemporary composers, or even my music. Her musicality shifts your focus from the fact that you are listening to a marimba, and more that you are listening to a great artist perform, regardless of the instrument.”Robert Paterson: Composer, Percussionist and Conductor, USA.Biography:Gillian began studying percussion at the age of twelve, moving to St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh to concentrate her high school education towards music at sixteen. Gillian has studied with the worlds most prestigious marimba soloists and attended many exclusive courses including the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar in New York City. In 2005, Gillian was awarded an £80,000 grant from Donald Dewar Arts Awards to study percussion at University of Miami Frost School of Music. In Gillian’s 3rd year of study, she was in a serious road traffic accident that resulted in her left leg being permanently paralyzed below the knee. Gillian was forced to return to her native Scotland to learn to walk again and has remained in the UK to develop her career as a marimba and vibraphone soloist, composer, and motivational speaker.Gillian has pursued her music career decisively, performing and delivering masterclasses throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and USA. She has performed to royalty, world leaders and performed live on BBC radio. Gillian publicly campaigns for the classical world to look past their pre-judgement of solo percussion so they can learn to understand what it really is. She also campaigns for schools and other education establishments to teach percussion with the same respect so they can utilize students potential as well as make use of the percussion instruments they have invested in.
