cardboard wings - KMurdock Music Group
Nine years old with cardboard wings
Jumping off the garden swing
I thought that I could touch the sky
Before I knew about goodbye
Mom said,"Be careful every time"
But careful wasn't on my mind
She wanted wind beneath my arms
Far away from growing harms
When I was fearless
When every dream felt close enough to taste
Before the real world came crashing in
And taught me how to break
Sometimes I'd give anything
To feel that free again
When imagination was my superpower
And I didn't know about the end
Trampolines were magic doors
To worlds no one had seen before
We count down five and close our eyes
Escape to candy paradise
My dolls would talk, the birds were friends
Each day an adventure without end
No drama then, except pretend
No heartbreak I couldn't mend
When I was fearless
When every dream felt close enough to taste
Before the real world came crashing in
And taught me how to break
Sometimes I'd give anything
To feel that free again
When imagination was my superpower
And I didn't know about the end
Now I know too much
Can I know what I've learned
Can't outrun what's coming
Can't go back
Can't return
To that girl with glitter wings
Who thought she'd never fall
But sometimes in my dreams
I still fly above it all
Feathers were treasures
Popsicles were gold
Before I knew of getting old
Mom, parents were heroes who fixed everything
Now I see their human seams
Road trips felt like mystery tours
Before I knew where highways end
Love was simple, pure and true
Before I knew what hearts can do
When I was fearless
When every dream felt close enough to taste
Before the real world came crashing in
And taught me how to break
Sometimes I'd give anything
To feel that free again
When imagination was my superpower
And I didn't know about the end
