Hello and welcome
Everyone back to britain under the microscope advanced
So you sound better
Uh much better
Much much better
Thanks
Great
So are you ready to carry on the conversation about nhs
About health service in the uk
Absolutely last time we talked about gengenal al how you go see see a doctor
What happens if you get ill in the uk
But i think still a lot of our listeners might not really know or understand the concept of nhs
Could you give us some just general background of nhs
Yeah
Cause so hs is quite new
Really
Really
If you think about it
So the nhs was actually founded in nineteen
Forty
Eight
Eight
And it was founounded after the end of the second world war
And
And main name was to provide free health care to all uk residents
Which we talked a little bit about before you often here determ welfare state
Yes
Ah this part of the welfare state
Yes
This all part the welfare state including pensions on employment
Benefit and other things that the state does to support people
But obviously when you talk about the welfare state
The nh chest is one of the first things that you'think of of so welfare state
You said it's right after the war
Um was it because the situation
The aftermath of the war
Which prompted us
Yeah Well
It was the idea that after people suffered so much
After people injured so much
During the war ar socisocity had had to change the whole i dear of becoming more open
And the state looking after people and the idea of welfare as well which before the war started to become important
But then it was interrupted
It became orananiccent
It became something that people wanted out of the war
They wanted something to show for all the suffering
That they are been through
So now everyone is taken care of essentially
Yeah
It sounds great for the general public
But it also sounds very be very expensive
It is very very
It sounds prohibitively expensive
You said it's paid for by taxes
Yeah
It's paid for by taxes and other sources of income as well
But overall spending on the nhhs is around ten percent of britain's gdp
Ten percent of gdp that is a lot of spending
I imagine is a huge organization
Then if it includes all the hospitals
All the public hospitals and clinics
The nhs is actually one of the world's top ten largest employers
So how many people does it employee
It employees around one point seven million people
You're kidding one point seven million people
Yeah
So roughly on average one in every trees in the uk works for the nhs
That would include all the doctors or the nurses
Yeah
It include my mom
Yeah
It worked for the nhs
Oh Well
I did not know that she worked in one the liberal trees
And that's why the mmany people is not just thought as a nurses
It's all the support staff that work within the hospital
As well
That will par the nhs
No wonder
This is a huge group of people that work for the nh s
But
But now i'm going to ask a quite blund question
Yeah
The idea is really good
And we know it's expensive
But sure
There are some issues
I've read about some of the issues
They're always some criticisms about the nh s
But so what are the issues
Well
One of the main issues is obviously dogs pay
Especially junior doctors and nurses they get paid a very small amount of money
Considering the train ing
The education
That they've had to reach that level
Oh
Really in the uk as well
Because in china you often hear medical professionals complaining about that they're underpaid
Yeah
If you think about it the training
The years they devoted it the studying so in the uk
As well in the nhs system
Yeah
So it's the whole idea that the n atatis is actually very expensive
It still underfundit
It still needs more money
Um
But where is the money coming from that is the question
That's when tough decisions have to be made
And tough decisions have been made repeatedly as in cutting certain things
Cutting certain services or closing hospitals
They're always of just trying to support the nass
But no one wants to see it disappear
No
There's another common complaints at which i experienced first hand
And i was was a friend
Even though you said yes
People can make appointment in the energy system
But sometimes appointments takes so long the waiting time it's extremely long
And also on the actual day of the appointment
You have to wait as well i remember once going in was a friend
So the appointment was supposed to be at twelve thirty
We wait until four to actually see the doctor
Yeah
That's very common
It is unfortunquite common
Yeah
What we call the wawaiting list
So the waiting list is a whole idea
That if
If you have something that's not serious
That's not life thretening
That's not life threating
Than people who do have more serious illnesses
They go in front of you
Um
But even if it's not life threatening
It can still cause the lots of pain
So for example
Problems with needs or problems with hips
So things that are not actually live thretening
But they still impacts on the person's quality of life
And they have to wait much much longer yeah
And also you have to wait at the hospital
I for assume that's because they're understafed a lot of hospitals
There is a lack of nurses and doctors in the uk
And actually many immigrants work for the nhs
That i've noticed a lot of the hospitals
That i've seen nurs hospitals
You can hear all sorts of accents yeah from medical professiones
Sometimes is quite strong accent
Yeah
As for example
We have nurses and doctors that come from the philippines
Yethey come from europe in the papaststan
They have doctors and nururses from all over the world
So you see it's always important to remember that people do speak with accents
Even doctors in uk
They are not necessarily having a standard british access as you see on tv
Very really
嗯
And also one of the general issues
That is affecting a lot of the countries
Nonowadays is the aging population
The population is getting older
Which means fewer
People are going to pay taxes
But more people are going to need medical treatment
Yeah
That's one of the big things
Because i talked a little bit about it before in our last episode
That's elderly people
People v age age sixty five don't pay for treatment
Even if they can afford it
And we do have a rapulagean population the same as most countries in the world
So the question is who's going to pay for it
And how can it carry on
Especially since the nhs was founded in the ninety forties
When the population was still relatively young
Exactly i think if you read any newspapers in the uk or watch tva news related programs
Nhs is one of the issues that are constantly been mentioned one of the topics
But i should say as well
That even though there are lots of issues
Nobody would ever suggest getting rid of it
Nobody because the benefits
There are so many benefits
There's so many benefits
And i also think that soottish people a genely very proud of the nh ches as well
And also the welfare state yeah
But here is the question say i am really rich
I'm well off in the uki don't want to wait for the nhsi can get private healthcare right
Yeah
Privhehealth are are avavable
It's very expensive
Ve i know how expensive i talk to some doctors who work in private healthcare
But i've never really see a doctor
How much does it cost going to see a doctor
To go to see a doctor for pripriate ate heth ltation would be around two hundred pounds for how long about fifty minute
Fifteen minutes talking to a doctor in private healthcare
You have to pay two hundred pounds probably more
So you have a lot of private doctors in london
At least in the arary o called honey street
It's for harley yeah
It's in the west end
It's close to oxa street
And it's famous in the centre for private health care
Oh
So many private clinics yeah
Are there guess that's for the social elite ite go
Oh
It's for the socially
And also for people who are lucky enough to get health care
Added as a benefits for their work
Some companies actually offer private houseare are well well private health are
Are a health insurance
But that's gota also be some very profitable companies
Yeah
But why do people still go to private health care
If they have nhsi know first of all the waiting time are there any other benefits they're more choice
That's because the nh s they assign doctors to you
But if you are in private health are
You can choose the doctor
If you say in china when we go to hospitals
We can pay a bit more to choose which doctor that i want to see
If he's the leader in the field
Yet we pay more
So in nhs you cannot do that
No
Whoever gets the sign to you is the one that treats you
Yeah
Private health care you can do that
And also the nhss well well mentioned junior doctors as well so less experience doctors theare still learning in private health care
You wouldn't have junior doctors so there are all experience
Yeah
Ah so this is one of things about being a doctor in the uk
Is
Is after being a junior doctor and bebecome someone with a lot more experience
Then you can start working for the nh chess
And also working for private health care as well
I remember some friends in london
They're doing both they do like for example three days in in nhs and four days in private clinic
Yeah
So for some doctors
This is way for them to balance their career and their income
I know we're only scratching the surface of nhs
But if you're interested in knowing more about the health system in the uk
It's very simple
You just go online and do your research
Or just read some major newspapers in uk
Am sure the topic of nhs will pop up
Eventually
There's always always the story about the nhss at least
Once a week
So if you have any experience of the nhs
Or if you been to the uk
Or if you are doctor study in medicine
Please let us know in the comment section
And also if you have any other further questions as well especially for those of you
Who are planning to go to the uk
To live or to study
Let us know
What you think in the comment section
