The attic smells of cedar and the dust of June
A scratched recording hums a forgotten tune
We were chasing the sun 'til our shadows grew tall
Writing our names on the garden wall
Gold-leafed secrets and the scent of the rain
Before we knew the weight or the cost of the pain
Everything felt like a promise kept
In the quiet corners where the daylight slept.
It’s a Polaroid fading in a shoebox drawer
A ghost of the person I don't see anymore
Walking through hallways that shrank with the years
Sorting the laughter from the salt of the tears
The clock keeps ticking but the echoes stay
In the hollow spaces of a different day.
Now the streetlights are LEDs, cold and bright
Cutting through the velvet of a digital night
I’m checking the maps but the landmarks are gone
Replaced by the glass and the steel of the dawn
Gravity pulled us to separate coasts
Trading our magic for headers and posts
The ink has gone dry on the letters we sent
Now we just wonder where the calendar went.
You can’t go back through a door that’s burned
To the unwritten pages and the lessons unlearned
But I keep the keys in my pocket just in case
I catch a reflection of a familiar face.
Turn off the lamp
Let the colors go gray
The wind blows the ashes
And sweeps them away.
