Hello
Everyone
And welcome back to america under the microscope
Hi luilu
Hi jamames
Let's continue or talk about american diners ers advanced version
Last time since we talked
I was thinking about this whole diner as a cultural symbol
And it just reminds me of something in british culture or english culture
The pups um i'm not saying they're exactly the same
But they do have similarities
I guess like the feeling of being
A part of culture
Yeah
Where you're going to bump in you know know frienfriends and other neighbors
You can your family friendly quite
I would agree that would be quite a thing that would be similar to it just he're bonding over coffee and eggs
Instead of kinds of logger or something
Oh
They do have coffee and eggs as well
So let's first of all talk about comparisons
Because i guess even after you research it
Even after listening to us
It's still
Because it's not part of chinese culture
It's still difficult for people to really know the difference between basically what sets dinners apart from other types of places
So let's talk about what is the difference between dinners and fast food joints like mcdonald h down one easy
Oh
Biggest st diffetween dinner and fast food dinrence is fast food restaurant you go up to the counter you order
And then you pick up your food use it down
Also dinners food is made to order
Where it's fast food is not okay
Yes i get it so fast food
It's always
There's no table service
There's no waiters
As a waiters but a diners always have
Always have uh to be honest
Last time
What we talked about two broke girls and then sort of i guess for our listeners
If you watched that show you kind of picture
The diner waireers ses to be like max and carolbut but in my percepthey're always ququite chunky older women
Yeah like a bit scary
But depends where you are
If you
If you were i went to university
That wawaiers role students ow it just depends on true
嗯
Where you are
But how does it compare to realilar restaurant apart from the price well big diners between like a dinner and lets to say at just general casual restaurant um cuisine is one
Because dinners are always americrestaurant
Oh
Restaurants will be anything from italian to cause the other stuff
So you wouldn't have a diner
That serves the italifood food
Chinese food
No
Then you wouldn't call it a diner
Wwant dn't call a dinner
We call a chinese restaurant uh
So it's basically just like american restaurant
Essentially a regular american restaurant with yeah
If we're going to compare like an american dindinverrsuan american restaurant
One of the biggest differences between these two things would be like what american food they serve like an american restaurant or much more likely to get things like barbecue
Barbecue at stake or an americamericger will be at the dinner
I see okay
That's very interesting
I never thought about it that way
Then what is the difference between dinners and cafe es cacaes they serve breakfast
Breakfast food it's a coffee
This is we're going to get really confusing
Because some dinners all themselves cacaes
But they're not cafe
They're not a cafe in the traditional sense
Because the traditional sense of a coffees
You go there to buy coffee
The biggest difference now is in america
If it's a cafe is brustal drinks
So like you don't get your expresss
Or
Or a lot of ay where as a diner well they have coffee
Yeah
But it's going to be america
Um no drip
Oh
Drip coffee
And you going to be big drip coffee
Like i like
If you go to mcdonald's in china
They have the big drip machines
They have the coffee in the pot
If you look behind ind councoune
It's that kind of coe e you find it a dinner
Just like mcdonald's coffee
Nothing like fancy coffee
Nothing like you like
Like starbux
Nothing like costa
And i see
And also i guess viewing about cafe in more like countries with cafe culture caffees are places where you relax some and probably just rebook
You read a book
But i guess that's not what dinners before you go in and you come out
Essentially
Nobody's going to really spend ages and ages in a dinner
Now some people sit they're drink coffein read newspaper
But for the most part people go in
They eat their meal
And then leave um where is in coffee shops in america and cafe
It's just like a cafe
You go to in europe
People go there order coffee set at the table
Spend the whole afternoon
There you have read a book
Work on their computer
Um things like that i know what sets a bars and dinners
A park
It's the alcohol
But what about dinor who which actually do serve alcohol okk
If a dinner serservalcohol
How's it different than a park ar one bar are never never family friendly
Because a can to take your kid okay
If dindinner ells alcohol
It's going to be just simply beer and wine
Um where as a is going to have cocktail
Cocktails
Harder drinks
I say i often wonder is there a specific like hidden kind of
Like class or income
Connotation like dindiners are for example for lack of a better word working class or people with lower income
Because they're cheap no not an america
If dinors are for everyone
If you go to new york
You'll say lawyers next to construction workers eating in diners because to americans
Dindiners there's a place
You get good breakfast food we don't really see it as as like
Oh
You're poor
You eat at a dinner
We don't have that kind of it doesn't have any set of class cannotation to it no just like somebody wants big in an eggs
Yeah
Some very just cheerful good
But would you say that diners that generally a little bit to me
They're always a little bit old fashioned they're ver
That's actually part of the nostlture of them is that they are old fashion
They remind a lot of americans of life
What life would be like in the nineteen hundred and fifties and sixties and because if you look inside the diner in the food
In the diner
The food hasn't changed much in sixty years
Ah
I guess it's nowadays in china
That's getting popular as well
It's the taste from the past that sort of idea
Yeah
So there's a lot of dinner that have this kind of i like to call like past futurism design
Past futurism yeah
So a lot of dinnism have like shininy sver ver curcured angles is very kind of sleak bold print sns
Thethere's all things that they had in the pof or music
This is what is going to be like in the future
So this is what people years ago thought about what future would be like
Yeah Ah
And there are people who go across the country
Just to take pictures of all these different unique looking dinners because the architecture for some of pretty cool
Yeah
Pretintereool does sound like fun
Next time i go to it united states
I would definitely want to go to a few more diners just to see
Especially i
I'm sure
They are some let's say more popular dinners
But probably better designed dinner
It's going
Going to look on you up to find the good ones um
But would you say that they are now getting less popular
They're falling out of favor a little bit with let's say younger crowds
I would say partially it's an american culture to adapt to things
So many dinner are
Are dopting to attract these younger diners by upping their food game
Trying to attract the instagram crowwd
There there a lot lot dinners that are trying do do somelike specispecity stustuff on their menus or super foods
Superfoods yes
Higher quality ingredients
It's like we think of things like spicing it uum let's come on ingredients all organic things like this to grab those young people's money
So like instead of serving bacon
An eg surf me shock
Shooka that sort of thing
Yeah
Kind of it would be like instead of just regular pancakes
This would be whole wheat
Or like rice gluton free pancacaes some whole organic free range cream butterblab blaw pe stuff
That sounds very instagramicand it very inincgming eggs
I would like do don't like bacon and eggs good old fashioned good be honest
That sounds a little bit
Like the transition of some poe traditional old fashion pubs in the uk
To what they call gastro pubs have heard of those it's set of the same thing
They up to game
They up to food game
And then they try to attract more this cerning client tell you
You got to make hehard
You got to adapt to get the clients come you
You going to make any any um
But either way it sounds like a really tough missses diners
It sounds like they have long hours food is cheap
So i don't mention they
Don't make a lot of um
Yeah
But that doesn't stop them from being one of the cultural symbols in america
Absolutely not in fact as as soon as i get back to america
Whenever i can
I'm going into a dinor
And i having a big pancakes
Now sounds about right and acactually make me rave pancakes
Now you don't right for those of you who are listening to the show
If you have ever been to the united days
I've ever tried dinner food
Or if you have anything to say
Or if you have watched the shows like two boook girls want to ask anything about dinors
Leave us a comment in a comment section
We'll see you next time
Bye bye everyone
Bye
