Today i figured

We could talk about this idea

These kind of support groups that are well mostly designed to help people fight addictions

But they can be for other things as well

I really only hear about those names

Those acronomms in america

Really i methey're not really a thing in the uk

For example

I maybe they are

Maybe then i'm not familiar with outside of american terms of these either um

I mostly know them in america

Based on i know people have been in them and tv

So let's talk about alcoholiics

Anonymous actually a show

American comedy show that i've been watching now it's going into the eighth season

It's come mom 极品老妈

I don't know if any of you who are listening to the show

Have watched that particular comedy

But that is about a group of women

They're all former alcoholiicthey're going to aa

To try to turn their life around right

First of all walk us through the name

Alcoholics means people who are addicted to alcohol

And then anonymous means no name right

The idea about anonymous is so that the people who join the group to try to fight their addiction they're not going to be shamed or anything like that for doing this so no names

So what happens inside the groups

What they talk about together stays inside the groups

They're not going to share that information with people outside the group

And on top of this they tend not to let outsiders just sit in on the meanings

It sounds like a secret society

Now it kind of is

But the reason they do this is

The thinking is if there's a lot of these outsiders

There's going to be no trust

And people aren't going to want to share their thoughts or their feelings

And they may not get the help

That they need um so usually most people need a sponsor to join a group

So so need

Need someone to say ys that you need this person needs help

I'm going to help

Help them get through it here

The sponsor doesn't mean the one that pathe money

It just means someone who's responsible for you

Usually you don't need pay

Pay for aa

Um usually they're funded by donation

And i like that when you see tv shows depicting

Obviously ii could only any of these organizations

So i could only go by what i saw on tv right they start always with

For example

I'm an alcoholic

And then they go on from there

And then they share their stories

Right that's pretty much

It they talk about their strugggas

They talabout about their succeses

Ses they each

Each other adice

But things like that

It's a support group

Usually the'll be a host or a leader

Who's going to be probably a person

Who's also was addicted

Who's been in the program a really long time could be a therapist

But the leaders all kinds of place people

But where do they meet

If they want the sort of anonymity

Where the most common places you find them are churches

So most churches have like community centers ors or meeting rooms

And most churches are like okay

These people are trying to turn their lives around

And we'll support them community centers um

But the location really isn't advertised

Because they don't want people just showing up anonymous

So you've learn about it by word a mouth

It's not hard to find

Because if you ask around

You even if you ask like the police

The police knows where they are

I don't know

If i'm getting this right

But it sounds like yes they are anonymous but do not secret society

Because they're not trying that hard to keep the secrecy of it

They just don't want to advertise it right

Theis not like they're going out of their way

Trying to hide the fact

That they are going to these places

That they're not trying to de

They're just not trying to advertises

Because they want more people to go

They want alcohol acture other addics to join the groups to get help

And it's pretty much a self diagnosed addiction 都是自己觉得就是

It's not really like you need a doctor's note

If think think you addicted to alcohol

Then you can go correct um

Yeah

You don't

You know

Although you can be ordered by court ook ay

That's whowhole order story

But you mentioned that they are

These support groups so not just aa not just alcoholiics anonymous

No big big es es would be a

But we also have na narcocotics anonymous

So this would be drug addicts

Dg addicts

Ga which is gambling and anymous

Um they don't all use the anonymous term

So they

They might just say people might just call a group

Um they might say something addict group

Whatever the addiction is actually

It's not always these things

It's because like alcoholis or drug addics or gambers a pathologc gamblers

These also sound pretty negative

Pretty bad

But they can also be things like people who have eating this order for example

Micammally a few years ago

Micammoally was a quite popular comedy show

And micacamali they met at an oa so overeat ers anonymous

These are people who have trouble controlling what they eat

They're generally quite overweight

And then so they go there

And they support each other

So that's the whole idea of a group therapy yeah

But what happens at groups

We said they share stories yeah

So what happens is people show up how those sit around whether it's small group circle or kind of just luctuer

Kind of seeding

Talking about the organizer will start by saying a few words

Talking about if they seeen in new faces and stuff

People will be then are under no obligation to share um there encourarage share are thethere's stories

What's happen there's struggles and their successes

Because then they will talk about what steps

They are on currently in their recovery process

What have they done to move up

Give each other support things like time

But people going for these yes to get support you early er on you said could also be called order 就是法律强制让他们去

It is that the thing yeah for example

People get sense for druaddiction

Um this can be kind of an agreement

Um you can eieither go to covery so narcratic s anonymous or jail

Which do you want um

So yeah

It can't be ordered by the court doctors don't order it

They can suggest it

But a lot of people go

Because personally they want help

Because it can can be hitrorobobottom they're hitting rock bottom

They want to turn their lives around

So they volunteer to go

They're not no one's forcing them

Although there can be family pressure um

But most people choose to be there um

It is just a support group

But interestingly

Because this is a cultural element

You do you get these quite a few of these support groups

So you do hear some of the terms

It has affected the language

Right

Some of the common ones

You hear would be the phrase

I'm on the wagon

Wagon is a car

Right Yeah

I did which is a phrase used by these people who are currently sober or quit or and are on the road to recovery

Uh on the road

So on the wagon

On the road to recovery

Getting better

So if you got a part

Hey

You want to beers like no

I'm on the wagon and mess this person is quit

Drinking

Actually a more common expression that i've heard is fell off the wagon

Yes

So that's the opposite this would be a person who was in a group

And then fell back into the habit

Which happens quite

Often and actually happens to most people um for

For addicts

They do have a system to keep record of how long you manage to stay away from your addiction

Yeah

There are 're maddiians or ps or reccoins

You hear people use different words

But so that these programs have a coin

That has how long you've remained sober or clean

It's we'll usuer clean a lot

Like y'll be the one year

The five year

The twenty year

Ah

That's why you hear things like i've just got my one year chip

Yeah

So meaning that they've been in the program and sober for a year

Ah 就是戒酒或者借某一种饮一年了

And then that they get like a chip rereder der ah it's a reminder

It's not really like financial chip is just a reminder to you

That you're collecting badgets

I think this ququimpimportant for people who want to achieve something that's quite hard

They need that sort of se se accomplishment

Satisfaction

That's the whole idea about it

Because i can provide motivation

It's like i really want that thing i can

I want to work towards it

And i

People can be proud of me

And i can be proud of myself

That idea um this is very very hard quqube heavy topic

And i think a lot of you probably don't really know much about
