Now i want to ask you a question

Today i kind of want to talk about a time in american history

Okay

But before we do i have a question

Has there ever been a time in chinese history

That you know of had they banned alcohol

Banned alcohol as you know china has a big drinking culture now

And we had a long history of making alcohol

As far as i think they are period

But the last as as y''ve try to band or control alcohol intake consumption

Uh hi remember correctly was in chingn dynasty

I don't think contemporary china they had a lot of alcohol bands

I do not know that um well in honor of this show being called happy hour

I'd like to talk about an era in american history

Which we call prohibition

Prohibition that was the period when you guys wanted to ban alcohol band alcohol

Now i wanted to reban it

It was a constitutional amendment that banned alcobil

There were many social movements that felt alcohol was the cause of many social problems

Such as fathers

Living behind families and so on

And so these movements

They push the government to create this ban

And as we know from history

They were successful

When you set social movement

Who started these with the people

Who i assuming people

Who were victims of

Of the problems related to alcohol

Yes

One of the biggest movements was a women's movement

Um

Because they felt they were victims of alcohol

And they had slogans like if your lips touch alcohol

They will never touch ment ine

Well

I think that's a very powerful slogan um hm

But these social movements obviously the government approved of their message hence the band

But what about the general reception from the society

Did they think it was a good idea

Or did they not like it well

A lot of americans did feel that alcohol was a problem

And it was a change to our constitution

Which means it had to have a majority

You get pasast also majority of the population obviously agreed for alcohol to be banned

And this periotertime did lead to a decrease and alcohol related illness um such as liver problems and so on

So it did have an effect um

But then if it was so good

It was bringing crime down

It was bring all these social relams to an end

And it was reducing alcohol related illness um how did it end

And why did it end

Well

There are two big reasons

The first one is the great depression

So that was when the market crashed

So the market crashed

And we also had other agricultural problems at the same time

Um they made it really bad and so in general

When people are having a bad time

They wanted to drink

They want want to resort to alcohol

And they were these people became angry

So the idea prohibition became much much less popular um and the other one and this one is a lot more straighforward before the government taxt alcohol

Ah bad alcohol lost tax

The government much ded more money

Since due to the great depression

So now they need to increase that or regain that part of tax revenue

Well it's actually a lot of also local taxes

So they band it

And so these local states cities lost this money

When they band it

Um and they were hurting

Because you need tax money to pay for roads

But even during the prohibition

People were so resourceful

I mean if they wanted to drink

They found other ways in they right

Well when there's a demand

There's always somebody to fill this demand

And people still wanted to drink

What we call speak eases

Well you it be a hapasforforso ii like like a two bbircut um

And they would lead you into the secret area

Where the bar was it's the reason haircut this as a brand name

It's because i thought it was fun

It's like one of those things that people found secret pleasure in

So i thought it was a since we are called happy hour as well

So i thought that was an act name

And plus it doubles on speak easy so training your speaking sols

But nowadays

Even though prohibition was long gone has been gone ten for so many years

It seems that the whole idea of speak easy of hidden bars still very popular

It is actually more popular

Nowadays

Yeah

Because they had style the music

The atmosphere

And if it works

People like to recreate it

And then also also that sense of ystery

Sense of hidden away like a hidden jam

Somewhere i've been to speak eeases in beijing

And it's a lot of fun

You know going to this just normal looking place

And you push a button the wall moves

And you see this beautifully decorated bar with some nice jaz music

Even though it's very nice atmosphere

Actually you can find them everywhere in major cities

I've been to speak eases in also around euroactually

And also in beijing

So if you're interested

Maybe try a few of the speeeases

Even though it's not the prohibition error anymore

But you can still get the taste

They get the whole atmosphere in
