Ladies and gentlemen, a warm welcome to the 2024 Nobel Lectures in Physics

This year's Nobel Prize in Physics is about artificial neural networks

and their central role in the revolutionary development of machine learning.

Machine learning is the ability of a computer to learn from examples.

Instead of following instructions of programmed recipes,

artificial neural networks are the foundational building block of machines learning.

By feeding a neural network with large amounts of data,

be it images, speech or music

it is tralined to recognize patterns.

Once it has learned to find these patterns,

it can generate new data that resemble the ones in the given data set.
