Once I read old Zen poetry
When “Void” appeared, its sense felt empty
It seemed to bid me let dear bonds break free
Lock my heart tight, cold and silently
Turn into a shell void of warmth’s melody
But time revealed we’d misread its decree
Void never means all things cease to be
See plain raw clay held by the craftsman’s knee
On spinning wheel, no carved shape can we see
Yet lacking form sets its potential free
To fire to cup, jar, censer as it may be
We all start as soft clay, mild and tenderly
Yet as we tread life’s winding roadway
Molded clerk, lover, role we come to see
A grown-up forced to steady gravity
We cling too hard, take this shape as all we can be
All forms rise from void, void breeds reality
Your present role’s no false fallacy
Don’t forget your root: soft clay’s simplicity
Void’s not a space where nothing’s seen
Void’s all the shapes before carving intervenes
Why do we drown in anxious agony
We grasp frail forms that crack so easily
Dreading their wear, their broken boundary
You are not this shape you strive to keep
You are the clay, unbound and deep
A crack’s no final end to weep
You may reshape anew as your heart seeks
