A Little Green
By: 王登顺
I stayed quiet in the dark
Long enough to learn its weight
The ground was heavy on my chest
But I learned how to wait
I heard the rain above my head
Like a knock I couldn’t see
Something whispered from below
It’s time to be
Ice let go the water ran
Roots were moving underground
I didn’t need a wide open door
Just a crack in the ground
I don’t need to be a tree
I don’t need the whole sky
Just enough room to lean toward
The light
I don’t need to bloom in gold
I don’t need the world to know
If I can be
A little green
That’s enough for me
I will rise quietly
Where the sun is calling me
I don’t need to be seen
Just a little green
Cold wind still remembers me
I remember it too
Every step I take upward
Feels honest feels true
Every inch I grow is mine
Every breath I take is new
I’m not chasing spring
I’m becoming it
Slowly through
I don’t need to bloom in gold
I don’t need the world to know
If I can be
A little green
That’s enough for me
I will rise quietly
Where the sun is calling me
I don’t need to be seen
Just a little green
If the storm comes let it come
I’ve been darker than this
If the night stays let it stay
I know where the light is
I don’t need to bloom in gold
I don’t need the world to know
I will be
A little green
And let it grow
I will rise quietly
With my roots and my belief
I don’t need to be seen
Just a little green
Still growing
Still leaning
Toward the light
