Hi
Everyone
And welcome back to britain under the microscope
Hello onland
Hello
Really ve one last time we recorded
We were talking about those delicious cookies
Have you been eating those cookies again
Yes
Quite a few of those
Actually i had a few packs
As well i always meant to ask you online
How did you manage to keep your figure
I'm and
这个身材保持的还是不错的
Despite the fact that you really like sweet things
I try not to eat too many sweet things
Really to be honest living in china
I do snack a lot less in the uk
In the uk it's very easy to find lots of different touch cakes and chocolate in china
You still have to make a little bit of an effort um and the reason
Why i'm asking you
This question is because i would like to talk about healthy eating and especially vegetarianism in the uk
Okay
First of all would you say people in the uk are generally healthy in terms of weight
Generally no
Why would you say that there's a lot of talk about healthy eat
And
And you can see me all the adverts
But if you go out and about on the street
You do see quite a few people who are
How should i say quite big
I'm relatively plumwell
Relatively plump
So the thing is i've done some background checking
Oh
Would you want to hear the start
I'm forbabwees can be very depressing
Actually
Tually
Quite surprising sing to me
Well well
Acaccording to some of the special wewesisite the latest test ats shows that the adult obesity in the uk
The rate is twenty eight percent obese
If for those of you are listening to the show
I think obesity is calculated by abmi of overight yethen you have overweight
And then you have obese
Yeah
So twenty eight percent is obesity
Another thirty six percent overweight
So basically that ans half overhalf of the british population
Adult population are overweight
I'm not too surprised um to be honest
It's bit depressing
But it's something that you can see
And this is also sigying that you're here in a lot from the government
As well um it is a real health problem
Actually it is also becoming a problem in china
As we are more economically developed
We eat more food is different sorts of food
They're more available
没有
And among them a lot of high sugar food
But that was about the adult
What about children
Children i know
I don't have the actual statistics
But i do know that children are not potikly hethy
嗯
There's a lot of childhood obesity
Um childhood obeity ity 就用儿童的肥胖
That is a problem in china
As well especially in recent years
嗯
So you said the government in the uk is trying to do something about it obviously promoting healthy eating yep
What else has it done
Lots of government messages
Lots about urging people to cut down the amount to sugar
That seaon
There's something called a sugar tax
Sugar tax to 糖水
Yeah
So if it contains a lot of sugar or sugery products
Than you get taxt more heavily
Yeah
So making suggary drinks more expense
Sive compananies now trying to produce the amount of sugar in their food
Sugar is definitely one thing that will make you overweight or even obese
But there's obviously also fat yeah
That is the whole trend about eating healthier becoming even vegetarian or
Or vevegan
Well
Exactly more more british people are becoming vegetarian or vegan particularly around this time
Because for the past yellow half ful
So the uk has been in griypthe pandeammis so a lot people be staying a home
Uh not exercising
Not exercse ing snack in as well
And this is actually some the government's very worried about because we have a public health system
We worworrithat maybe about about on the undermuch time
Um there's going to be so much pressure on the nhs
Because of all will be people that is really understandable
But essense you said being vegetarian is becoming more popular
Exactly how popular
How many people are vegetarians in the uk
At the moment about one in eight
People are going veggie
Going vegegy means becoming vegetarian
Yeah Wow
One in eight
Um That
That doesn't include people who are trying to juice the amount of me
That they eat
But
But they are maybe vegetarian for a few days of the week
呵呵 哈
Honestly
This is something that really tikkles me
If you're vegetarian for three days of the week
You're not a vegetarian or engenglish to actually invented a word called flexicitarian have you heard of that
Yes Yeah
I've talked about in a buzzworard section
If a flexitarian is someone mamaly ly at at fanned based things
Vegetables
对对对
Sometimes also eat meat and fish
Oh Yeah
I think quite few people are that now now
But vegetarians and veveans
What
What are the differences
Oh
That's what ite complex quesall
Because veganism m vevegetanism has quite a few different definitions
Vevegans is probably stestefururther urther
Oh
So for example
A vegan wldn't eat eggs or any animal products at all because like dairy products
My day right yeyeah
Vegetarian dependent on definition
They do sometimes eat cheese and eggs
Uh i've even heard of some vegetarians who would eat fish
Because they think that's not meat
Yeah
This is there are so many definitions
I'm sure some of you
If you're serious about vegetarianism
You can perhaps explain to us
Um but coming to the reason for being a vegetarian
Maybe nowadays is getting more popular in china
But before if you hear someone saying that they are vegetarian
Then you would immediately assume they are chjai ananfor like they are religious
That's not the case in the uk
Is it no traditionally
There's no real religious reasons behind becoming vevetarian for example
Like britain used to be abstromly ly christian country
What still is to was an extent
But there's nothing in christienanity or about eating meat
About eating meat all going vegetarian especially in the christianza in the uk
嗯
So essentially
People are turning vegetarian simply because of the health reasons
Then uh partly health
But a lot of vegetarians
Become vegetarians because of animal
Welfare
Animal will all because they don't want to kill
They think killing animals for food
嗯哼
Is not okay
Yep
And also how animals are kept as well
So for example
Free rage
Eggs a very popular
嗯 Buk
就是散养鸡的这种鸡蛋
Free range
We talked about that before
嗯
There is one expression
That i constantly see in like animal welfare very strange expression called battery chicken
Yeah
Battery doesn't mean
Battery like 电池
Does it no a battery chicken or battery hand
It's when you keep the hand in cages
It's h like small small cages in small cages that they can't move
And it just a battery eggs
It's basically kind of animal torture
It is and back a few years ago that used to be the norm
But now free range eggs
Even people not vegetarian
Y're probably choose free range eggs um
I think you do hear
Talks about that in china
As well now when you go to supermarket to buy eggs
You do see free range
And also free range chicken
And also free range meat
Yeah
That's a night
If i buy eggs or if i buy meat
I generally look for free range um and apart from the animal side of it
Think some people are also doing it for environmental reasons
Well Yeah
Farming animals does produce a loof of bon on oxide um
And there's much more of the focus on sustainable farming
Sustainable farming to make minimal environmental impact
Yeah
Ah honestly though we've talked all about these details about vegetarianism and healthy eating
And whayouyour take on it
Or what would you say in general in the uk
How do you people feel about vegetarianism
If they are not vegetarians themselves
I would say that vegetarianism is now the norm
Or
Or is now seen is something and lots of people are
When i was growing up
It was seen as a bit of ununsual
Maybe a little big extreme um
But nowadays
It's not seen as anything strange or anything nowadays
And according to your laws and regulations
All of your restaurants have to at least provide one or a few vegetarian options
Oh Yeah Um
If you look at a british menu
It will clearly say what products are inside that food
嗯
And it will have like a little vv sign for vegetarian
Tomorrow this vegetarian
嗯
And normally they would have a very short gloss to show
If there's eggs in it
If this buts us
And so i'm so full
嗯
之前我们也谈到过
就是英国餐馆里的那个菜单
一般都会很明确的标注哪一项是可以让素食者吃的
就是safe vegetarians
But you heard of the recent controversies about vegetarian influences on
On for exple instagram or facebook or twitter
Some of these vegetarians or even vegan influencers
They were caught on camera eating meat or fish
And they
And that consts quite a str
Yeah
Doesn't
I would say that vegetarian ism
Because it's such an emotive issue
It's a question
That does provoke a lot of debate
And sometimes always say a little bit of extremeity
As well um
It does generate quite a few extreme opinions
So for example
There are some people in you gay
And i'm sure
They
They are in china
They are vegetan into the point
Where they just completely oppose anybody eating me
This is how i feel honestly i have no problem with people choosing whaeveryday like to eat
However what i sometimes finit a little bit hard to accept
Is the fact that some vegetarians really just have a very small group of them can be a bit judge
Can be a bit judmental
So if i go out
I have vegetarians ans or vevean an ds theyyylololy ly they're okay
So if we go out to eat
They just eat what sues them
And i can eat what i like
But some
Sometimes you will meet some people
They say their vegetarian
And they judge you
When you eat meat
That is something
I have a sight issue with yeah to be honest
I would actually like to be vegetarian
Ii ququququk et at i don't
I don't think have the wheel power
It's the old saying
I would like to be vegetarian
But i just love stakes too much
Well pretty much
But
But hopefully in the future
They're talking about lab grown meet and things like that
That's a new trend isn't it and to be honest
If that carries on then i probably will um
So let's wrap up here
We've talked a lot about vegetarianism
Vegisism
Also hehealy eating in the ukk and ve gengeneral
If any of you are vegetarians
Vegans
Or if your interested in this topic
