嗯
Hello again
And welcome back to britain under the microscope
欢迎又回到鲜华英伦
Hello Alan
Hello
Everybody last time we talked about schools in england
嗯哼
And now can we graduate from schools and go to universities
Absolutely in today's episode
Let's talk about english universities or british universities
So the same as the school episode
We're going to be mostly focused on universities in england
That's because allows schoschotish universities
They have slight different
Different stestem no problem
Last time we mentioned after secondary school
When you're sixteen
You passed agcse
Yeah
And then you can go to a six form or college
But tually you coop yeah
And then what happens
Then when you 're about eighteen
Then when you do a lelevel
Yeah
A level
I think for people who are interested in the english school system or want to go to a british university
You probably know a level
A level
有点像英国的这个高考吧
Yeah a little bit similar
If it's for university application
Then what are the subjects being tested in a level
What ae level you can choose which subjects you want to be tested on
Oh
So there's no compulsory causatheis
No compulsory subject
Like there is for gcsa
Where you have to learn english
Your math and science for aleleveels
You chochose se whichever subjects you're interested in
So you choose a few subjects
Yeah
So how many did you choose
I did free in the end
I did german history and ancient history
As well history and ancient history yeah and german
Wow
So you went for a history degree
Then you have my undergraduate degree was in classics
Uh classics so latin
An ancient greek
Yeah
Well impressive
Thanks
What is the university like for undergraduate program is it three years or four years
It's generally three years years um language courses um normally four years
Because you have to do up study gragraate program
Me well well
But more often not it's about years years
嗯
And after the undergraduate studies
You have postgraduate
我们说研究生
Yes
And post graduate programs in the uk are generally much shorter than in china
A monsters degree is generally about a year
What about a doctoral i don't talall is about doctoral
I it's
It's still generally
Ok
It's generally shorter in the uk
So how do people in in england apply for universities
Can they apply for a different universities at the same time
Yet they can choose a selection of universities
And you apply for an undergraduate degree through something we call uksuuss so universities colcolleges at misthrough through that everyone has to go through that germany
Yet you go straighght through that you choose a number of interested universities
And they will choose to accept you for an interview
And do you have to decide what major you want to focus on when you apply for universities
Absolutely
That's because in england
We don't have the major or minor system
That's more american universities
But the way major and minor 是主修专业和副修修的专业
Yeah
So in the uk
You choose what you want to study from the very beginning
What if you find out
You don't like it can you switch
You can change a dedegree
But it's quite complicated sounds like it's very difficult to do it
It would quite ite fficulult do it
And how do you get into universities
You have a level obviously
But that's for everyone
That's not linked with university
Do they also have separate exams not really know more often not universities are more the line on interinterws uah so for example one university saw my grades
And they saw my personal statement
And they decided whether or not they wanted me to go along to the interview so in the uk
In england
A lot lights on the interview so it's just almost like a job interview similar
It's a make or break yeah
And what do they ask you in those interviews
That's quite sebeen a few years since i last went to university
But they most stasked me about my interests
About why i wanted to study this subject
And also a lot of general knowledge as well about the subject
And it was somewhat like a test
Test well uah just not written test yeah
Now let's talk about getting into university
After you get into university
What's the life like well the uniververity ststts in september so and when everyone ststarts to move into halls and hols are like dormitors
Yeet we call them hhols of residents um or just call them halls
And the first few weeks
People just get in used to university life so for first jaer students
They will have a fresherous week
Fresherous week for freshman yeah
Because in england
We don't really say freshmman softwer more yeah americamerican yeah american
But fresherous week is a week where people go around
They meet lots of new friends
Theare lots of parties
People start sign enough for clubs and societies
So people not really studying
They're more tting to know each other
It's kind of like orientation with yeah
But in the uk just a little bit more drinking
Bit more drinking
But what is the academic life like in a university
Do you have to go to a lot of lectures
A lot of classes to a extent
Yes
But in this i'll speak for my own experidy so going to university
We had one lecture a week for one particular course
And then you probably have one or two seminars based on that lecture a lot of it was cell study
So we go to a lecture
We have to do readad
We have to discuss sreadings in seminars s led by either the lectua
Um
That's what we would call a teachers
We call them lectuous
What about professors
Professors
There are fewer professors than there are in an american university
For example
That's because there are normally only one or two professors in a department
And professor is normally the head of the department
Um
So it's a different definition of professors
Yeah
You said apart from lectures
Then theis seminars
Yeah
Sometimes people think universities in other countries
They look like they don't have that many lectures
But there's still a lot of workload
Oh Yeah
That's in the reading
You're given a very very extensive reading list
And you're expected to read at least half for the books on that reading list well
And youexpeexpected to be able
Disdiscuss these as well in seminars
And that t's come back to the drinking part
You said students they will live in halls
Is that mandatevery one one needs to be living on campus or living in student residents
No
It's not mandatory in england
But it's something that's encouraged
Um
So may students are encouraged to live in horse for the first year
Because this is normally the first time
They've lived away from home
Um Um
It's about been bit more independence
Because it's also been away from your parents
As well more freedom
But a lot more freedom um it's that do people move out of the student residents gerally yeah
Yes
Second d urgeer
They either move back home
Or they move into a student flat with friends
It is that cheaper than living in halse
It can be sometimes it is sometimes it isn't
That's because in horse you would have your own room or you share with someone
But it's more common to have your own room and horse
They can never be self cated
Where you have access to a small kitchen
Yes
So you have to cook yourself yeah
Or they can can cated as well
So someone provides it was food yeah
That being little canteam
What most chinese think of english university british universties
The first two names that come to mind an oxford and cambridge yeah um in the uk
You call it oxfordge yeah uh
We will generally say them as oxydge and these are the two oldest universities in engengum ah the cram
The a cram and there's a lot of rivalry between the two as well um so for exexple people in oxbridge bridge look down on oxford and vice verser and a lot of this comes out in competitions
The most famous of which is the boat race
The boat race i'have heard of that yeah so oxygen cambridge um they would have a boat race along the terms every single year
But oxygcambribribut many many
You would know it's an a lead camsity um so there's a lot of criticism
That's these universities on what we call ivory towarers um
Every power we translated that directly in the 象牙塔
Yeah
Which means they're detached from the world
Yeah
Aren't we be able to relate to the real world
If you think about oxfordge they're not like your other universities a lot of them are based in london
But oxford seems to be in their own little world
Or absolutely they have their own traditions
Even their own terms
An oxford
An actututown
Yeah also in tenicicties ties
But they were in technical cities
But they're actually more like small towns
And they dominated by the university
So they must be be different from other
Other universiand they london based
Can't very very different for example
My university in london didn't really have a campus um
Your university is uclucl
Actually ucl will ranked up there with oxybribut
Then it is the top three more ucl university
London
There
Germany
Now vked along oxford
Cambridge
There is still so much to talk about about universties
But let's discall it a day for now
And we can discuss further in the advanced episode
Absolutely and many of our listeners you might be studying in england or planning to go to an english university
Or planning to send your kid to a university in england or in the uk
So let's know what you think
And let's know what do you think of the main differences between universities in england and universities in china
We'll be wafor your comcomuntil next time
So
So next time
I
