Moves out at 17 leaves the small town life
behind
Heads to the city to make a new life
She has a boy and a dream and she believes
that’s all she’s gonna need
When she leaves, she swears she won’t be
caught dead in a small town again
Everything starts out all right but soon takes a
turn
Everybody she thought cared, turns their backs
on her
And She struggles so hard just to (breathe) some days
Ends up in another small town
different name still the same
She lives in a one room apartment above the laundromat
And spends her days mostly dreaming about
All the things she doesn’t have
Like true love and serenity and a safe place to land
And she prays someday she’ll be a woman
Who can testify to that
But for now she’s just a lonely girl
above the laundromat
She makes it by the grace of God through
some dark and distressing months
Ghosts of regret and shame gone by still haunt
her for a while to come
But one day she knows she’ll be free from a
past gone wrong
She lives in a one room apartment above the laundromat
And spends her days mostly dreaming about
All the things she doesn’t have
Like true love and serenity and a safe place to land
And she prays someday she’ll be a woman
Who can testify to that
But for now she’s just a lonely girl
above the laundromat
20 years go by before she goes back to that little town
She’s finally at peace with the hard times she’s known
The laundromat apartments there and in the window, she can see
A young girl waving a white flag down down on her knees yeah that's me
There in that same one room apartment above thelaundromat
I’m leaving all the pain behind because its now part of the past
All the blame and shame and tears over things
I didn’t have
Are no longer part of me I’ve got a new identity
I’m grateful for every hard earned scar I have
And I’m OK cause it’s here this stuff stays
Above the laundromat
