Hello again
And will come back to new zealand under a microscope 欢迎你
Oh
Out out hhaha
新西兰
Today is a special episode
And we are connecting with our friend simon right now in new zealand
Hi Simon
Yeah Fine
Fine and dealing with the second search in beijing
Hopefully not gona be too bad
I've heard situation in new zealand is really good
Right now
So you're no longer in lock down
Everything's back to normal uh
Yes i think officially we're in level one
Locked down level one because was one or two restrictions
We can't you know go ground
Kissing strangers for example
Um
But
But there were less ver
Everything is better to normal
Yeah um good
So i thought it would be a great opportunity for us to talk about your experience in new zealand under locck down
But when did you announced a lock down
When did it officially start was it in mark fabor ii think was the end of february or early march
So we first
We first in new zealand
Uh heard about the
Heard about the virus around late january
Um i think was around the twenty
The twenty
Twenty seven of january
It was reported that was a group of new zealandanders uh that were living in guuhaa
And then been um i think they're gone into quaranting in wuhan and the new zaland government wanted up to bring them home uh and then
And then i'm pretty short was early much that we went into
Into lock down
嗯
You just mentioned locck down levels
So the maximum level was that you experience was level for right debt script lelevel for as you go out unless less 're in a central work
Other than for what a short local walk
So people were allowed to go outside
And do ce exercisse in their garden or on their street
As long as they weren't coming into contact with anyone else
So what about going to supermarket
Going grocery shopping
Yep
So people over seventy years old were told to get uh young people to do the shopping for them supermarkets were open
Well
There was some some very heavy requirement
So only certain supermarkets could stay open
But the ones that were allowed to they
They had restrictions on how many people could enter the supermarket at one time i see
So there were long very very long cues yeah
And everyone had to stand two meks aapart in those tooes
That's exactly what we went through during the locck down period
But what was the first reaction
How did you feel when the lockdown was announced
对
Well well for me personally unself emplayed
So i was quite happy to
To stay at home
Not have to go to meetings
My
My work carried on as normal and insteset of driving around the country meeting clans
Uh uusing zoom ype or other video uh meeting software
So you were okay
Did other people freak out
Yes Yeah
So new zealand people we're pretty
Um we get excited quite easily so
So i think it's a nice way to put it
Yeah
We collectively we went into panic station
So we um
When it was announced
That we're going to level for everyone to went the supermarket
To send it in the supermarkets
Um ah sort of came the conclusion that was the end of the world
That was an apocalypse
Um Wow
Yeah
We
We were not called
嗯
And the basase stocking up on what food or wallet paper
Yeah
So there was a little little stocking up of toil paper um
There was a lot of stocking up on hand senotizzand um antibacterial wipes um say ying there quite a few supermarkets um in first vehicle sum of locked down ran out of food
But the reality is i mean new zealand producers food
We export huge amounts of food
So people are not overreally worried about food
I don't think
So i don't think it asn't legitimate worries i think
I think some people like the excuse to panic
You know they
They went and bght as much as they possibly
Could i was going to say toilet paper
What is the fascination with toilet paper
Because in china that's really not one of our concerns
But it seems like many countries around the world are stocking up on toilet paper
Yeah ii personally don't get it either um
But you know having
Having gone and kepin the bush
Having to use leaves
But you got to the toilet um
It's not doisn't so
But so certainly
Toilet paper is important
But it's quite funny
You mentioned it um
I have a friend in new zealand is a website developies 's got very very twisted sense huhumor
So he got red on the lock down
And decided to set up a website selling toilet paper by the role
And i was a joke
So it was
It was a joke
He wasn't doing it seriously
And so he put
He puts some stupid prices on it like three dollars
Five dollars
I had been before a per role of toilet paper um plus curian fees
And he
He had only these people from australia
Don't not even new zealand from another country buying toilet paper on his website by the role
And having been couried to australia so left to say one goof toilet papers about three dollars
Which chons i don't know it maybe fifty rmb
But then of course there apanin another one hundred and fifty rmb for the curiofee
Yeah
That just sounds like total panic there but speaking of panic apart from these daily necessities
That or people were panic buying
对
Were they struggling or facing any other challenges for example financial difficulties
Um because businesses obviously had to close down many of them
Yeah Yep
So during during the lock down
The government was quite generous
They provided funding to businesses to pay staff that gorethe poonments
They've got it a government loan system
Which is aa no interest lothat goes to the ance of finsure
Them over for the next
The next pple of months
Wow
There's a whole lot of financial support for businesses to um
What about individuals
Indivividuals
Yeah
So i'i've been in new zealand
We've got a quite generous ununemployment benefit system
So if you don't have a job
You don't have an income
You can apply to to the government and the government each week pay money
And have been it's not a luxury lifestyle
You're not going to um
It's not like you're certainly rich
You're definitely not
But it's
It's certainly aa superior system to many other countries
嗯 Um
So it's enough to get by yeet
Let me put one person considers getting by
Compared to what another person considers getting by as quite different
But you can uh it can pair your rent
Compile your food
Can um they pay electricity
Bbls ls
Know know basbasstuff
But you're not gonnbe be go out out to five star restaurant every night um
But don't people have savings during times like this
And they dig into their savings for a many day you know
嗯 No no Um
We are really bad and new zealand for saving money um
If we've got money
We will spend it
So there was a government report that came out
It suggested that people only had enough savings to last them for two weeks
So without an income
Wow
They would run out of money within two weeks
Which is
Which is quite scary
Really yeah
I started understand why people panicked because without you know
Without the ongoing income
They're going to run out out money
Very very very quickly
So that park was funded by the government
That still doesn't help with the obviously the sudden change in lifestyle
I know around the world certainly in china
I'have seen people have been doing a lot of things to keep themselves busy and keep themselves saying during the locck down and what have been been doing in zeeand during the lock down period to keep themselves entertained ah well a lot of dancing um and filming themselves dancing um
So we've been bombarded by by videos of family dancers uh gohosh terrible um
Another thing
Another thing
Which um h which is quite popular all over the country
People who put teddy bears
Teddy bears in the windows of their houses um and so kids okay
Kids when they are walking around outside
Going for their daily exercise
They can go encount where the bears out and send and put up online
Where they saw bear so so it ququcute like a bear hunt
They like a bear hunt
Yeah Yeah
Teddy bear hunt
Corite Yes
I know that
I know that
Um
Cercersusupermarkets
They're so that of condso so ad ad that what what you well obviouly people have been keeping busy well
We can probably maybe be a spiken in
In kids in the next months
So yeah
Yeah
Not if you use condomned no
Yeah
It's too say yes alright
But what have you been doing
Personally have you been working
Yeah
So um i
Because i'm
I'm so plelaant
Ui'm not able to work from whatever have i've
I've been working quite a lot
Um i was so been gardening yeknow i said like an an perperyeet so ii grow a range of vegetables and fruit
Um in fact
Here we often eat what fruit which is nice
Here we satisfying you sounds very self reliant
I think that's why you coped very well with the locked down
Yeah
I been personally i inlisaid before before i lalapped joined the locked down
I like you're not having to see people
You sound
You sound like a hermit so a part from gardening
Apart from working
Did you also do exercise at a regular exercise
Did you let's say go for a walk
Every day doing things like that it's funny
Yeah
So john locked down because we grow allowed to go for what once today i actually did that's probably i got more exercise
John locked down than i do when
When it we're actually supposed to go outside
So pride to lock down ii would always be driving around the country
Going to tings ings
You know when you're living out of of hotels or
Or your car in some cases
It's
It's too easy to go to mcdonald's or birack junk yeah
Junk and
And yes
So purely by eating food
Vegetables
Every day not for my own garden
Yeah
Over over six weeks
Um i lost ten kg largely due to healthy eating
So that is you're locked down diet very lucky
Because a lot of people get super down during their locck down
And then they rested to eating ating a lot of sacks on healthy food and many people i know have gained weight during this period
嗯
But you sound like you have thoroughly enjoyed
If not enjoyed at least made the most out of being uh underlock down
Did you experience any low moment
I'm did you ever have fefeeling of all when will this be over
When will like be back to normal
Yeah Yes
Yet
The low points came about when watching the tv or looking online
Unfortunately the new zealand media often takes its new stories from australia or from the us
And there's been a lot of mt china reporting in those countries
We do also get get in new zealand
Having lived in china for many years
You know i consider china and eventually beijing like my second hometown
I thought it was just so unfair
How the western media is
Is really thicstating uh attacking china 是
And it just seem so hhad the critical
That just seems so unnecessary this system so do not working
So they have to deflect and attect china ina maybe really annoyed i gave up watching tv after a week
I think especially during the locck down
Especially when whole world is facfacsuch an unprecedented ball
Unprecedented in our living memory
The pandemic people could use some positive energy
Could use some words of comfort
And all that instead of having to live through completely negative comments stay in and day out
I think that would depress anyone
And i certainly went through some really depressive episodes
We're just seeing no hope
I would say a lot of people are facing stress
During this very very unusual times
And many are struggling with certain level of mental health issues
Yeah
Absolutely we have seen that in new zealand unfortunately
There's been an increase in family violence
And there's been a slow but noticeable spicon in racism
嗯
New zealand is is pretty good at reporting these types of things
These type of negative things so monitoring done
And seeing the increase so the government um our prime minister to centra dern
Every time she goes on dv
She's always pushing be kind
You know respect dollars be kind support you 's always your family
Your neighbors
And certainly the government has put a lot of effort into trying to support people with mental health issues
Yeah
It's nice to hear this kind
Kind
Be kind mind this message is out
This is such a tough time for many people
For many families
For many businesses
I think what we need to do is really
Really try to seek out the brighter sign of things
And then try to collabortively seek away to get out of this
And then something else which i've
I've noticed over the past few weeks
And we cannot have locked down several weeks ago
And just walking around the streets
I've been really impressed
And in that occasion
You hear racist comments
You know it could be anti china
Could be antty asia
Could be just
Just racism um
But i've noticed that people are less tolerant of it um
So i was king
King around other day
And someone made a passing comment
Racist comment
And the people around them
Turn to them and sit
Hey
Why did you say that
You know why you being racist st what
And
And i think actually that's covered
Think it's been absolutely terrible but the the message of the governments been sending out about support people be kind
I actually think it's making a difference
I think people are actually standing up
And when they see someone that's being discriminated against they're going in an end
Supporting them and helping them
And i find that is very positive
I really like that actually you've answer third my question
I was going to ask now things are getting back to normal have you noticed any changes in people's lives and behaviors
And you certainly gave us a hopeful note to end today's discussion too honest
I mean nobody could have really predicted this whole pandemic
But hopefully we're getting something out of this experience
Not just having you look back and think think having a terrible few month at least taking something positive out of it
嗯
Thank you very much
Simon for connecting with us and in the future
While checking with you and then we
We can talk about new zealand and life in new zealand
A bit more thank you and i look forit
It just lately we'll see you next time bye talk y day day bye
