Last Train Home
The platform is empty at midnight
Just me and my bag and the lights
The last train to somewhere I used to call home
Is pulling away from the station I know
I've missed it again always missing
This train that could take me back
To the place where I was born
Where the people who raised me still wait
For a call that never comes
For a visit that never happens
Because I keep missing this train
Keep missing the chance to go back
To what was to what could have been
To the life I left behind
When I got on the train going forward
And never looked back to find
What I was running from in the first place
What I was trying to escape
Some small town with small minds
That told me I'd never amount to much
So I got on the train going forward
And I've been going forward ever since
Chasing some dream I couldn't name
But couldn't stop believing in
The train kept stopping at stations
I kept getting on getting off
Meeting people losing people
Picking up and dropping off
All the pieces of who I was becoming
As the miles piled up behind me
And the train kept moving forward
Through the night through the day
Through the years that all blurred together
Into one long journey
One long track
One long going away
From everything I knew
From everyone who loved me
From the place where I belonged
To this nowhere I'm always going
The conductor announces the last stop
But I wasn't ready to get off
I wasn't ready to be done moving
To be done with all this motion
The train is here
The doors are open
And I'm standing on the platform
Between the past and the future
Between staying and going
Between running and being
Between the man I was
And the man I could be
If I just got off this platform
If I just let the train go
If I just stayed in one place
For once in my life
The conductor calls out
Last chance to board
And I look at the train
And I look at the platform
And I make my choice
I put down my bag
I let the train go
And I step off
Onto the platform
Onto the ground
Onto the place I've been running from
For all these years
And the train pulls away
Taking with it the last of my running
The last of my excuses
The last of my pretending
That there's somewhere else I need to be
That there's something ahead worth chasing
That the answer is always over the next hill
In the next town in the next life
Maybe the answer is here
On this platform
In this town
Where I started
Maybe I've been running
In circles all along
And the train was never the answer
Just a way to avoid the question
So I'm standing still
I'm staying put
I'm finally here
In the place I left
The place that made me
The place that broke me
The place I had to leave
To become who I am
