The Witch of Salem
Standing by the fire, I finally understood:
5HERO
The castle clock is always half a beat too slow
They said her cauldron brewed a crimson fog
But no one saw the pot upon the hob
She walked the cobblestones her hem a lick of moonlight
Her hair a red that never knew a night
Her fingers only touched the stray—
No demon just a kindness thrown away
They raised the torch they built the pyre high
She stood there like a poem too pure for this sky
When flames kissed her dress the crowd forgot to breathe
Behind the smoke—a face that made their young hearts grieve
No monster no spell no mark to break
Just a twenty-year-old girl for mercy's sake
She looked like every first love you let go
And now the ash is all you'll ever know
The rumors sailed before her boat could land
That serpents nested in the blue of either hand
But no one remembered—she gave her last herb to the poor
Fear is faster than truth and kindness is the gallows door

I stood in the front row the fire in my face
I remembered a dried daisy she gave me last fall
I turned away then now I watch her ashes crawl
And somewhere deep in Salem's dry wells
Her red hair's ashes still softly dwell
Drink that water it tastes like regret
Sweet and too late like a kiss you forget
We didn't kill a witch We killed tenderness for good
