Rust on My Rifle - Dark Country Boy
There's rust on my rifle
It's been years since I've held it
A layer of time
Like the dust on my shell
The desert don't speak
But it sure don't forget
I left a piece of me back there
I can't reclaim myself
Rust on my rifle
Scars on my hands
Fighting for a flag I barely understand
Memories I buried
Keep crawling like sand
Rust on my rifle
And blood on this land
The nights are still loud
Though the world's gotten quiet
Shadows of brothers
Their laughter, their pain
I stare at the moon
Same one we all fought under
But it don't give me answers
Just more of the same
I wonder if they see me
From wherever they are
Would they forgive me
For every hidden scar
Rust on my rifle
Scars on my hands
Fighting for a flag I barely understand
Memories I buried
Keep crawling like sand
Rust on my rifle
And blood on this land
I traded my trigger
For a hammer and nail
But the ghosts still follow
They ride every trail
I build to forget
But the cracks always show
Rust ain't just metal
It's in my soul
