I stopped waiting for the scene to start
Stopped standing in the wings
Decided that the story I was given
Was the one I'd rewrite everything
No more supporting role in someone's narrative
No more soft light on somebody else's face
I picked up every chapter I'd been handed
And I finally took my place
This is not a comeback
This was never a defeat
This is just me
Finally finding my own beat
The plot is mine now
Every scene and every line
The morning and the evening
And the everything in between is mine
The plot is mine now
I'm the one who holds the pen
I don't need a happy ending
I just need it to begin
With me
Choosing me
The plot is mine
And I'm finally
Writing something worth my time
I used to edit myself down to palatable
Shrink the parts that took up too much space
But the version that I trimmed away
Was actually the best and realest part of my face
So I'm growing back into the corners
Growing loud into the room
The plot is mine and I'm not sorry
For the space that I consume
You can be the main character
Without leaving anyone behind
It just means you stop
Narrating someone else's life
And start living in your own
Line by line
Word by word
Scene by scene
Mine
The plot is mine
Every word
The plot is mine
Finally
Mine
