You Made the Night Feel Easy - BeeWaee
I had grown used to evenings
that felt too long to face.
The room would become quieter,
and every thought would stay.
I kept the television on,
just to hear another voice.
I told myself I liked the silence,
as if I had a choice.
Then you began to sit with me,
when the summer days were done.
You never tried to cheer me up,
or ask what I was running from.
You talked about small things,
and let the hours move.
Somehow the night felt softer,
when I was there with you.
I did not have to be amusing,
or find the perfect words.
You never made the quiet,
feel awkward or disturbed.
I could leave a sentence unfinished,
and you would understand.
For once I did not feel the need,
to be more than I am.
I used to think that comfort would come when life was right.
When every fear had left me and I could sleep at night.
But comfort was much simpler than anything I knew.
It was someone staying near me,
with nothing left to prove.
The summer moved around us,
warm air through the screen.
And I began to notice,
how calm a night could be.
I stopped waiting for the darkness,
to bring the old ache through.
You did not change my whole life,
you only stayed there too.
I had forgotten nights could feel this easy,
until I spent them next to you.
