Say It Anyway

I wrote it down a thousand times
Then tossed it in the bin
I practiced in the mirror
But forgot where to begin
You looked at me so kindly
I nearly lost my breath
My words went out the window
Left stammering instead
I tried a clever opening
Something smooth and cool
But every phrase came out
Like a nervous grammar school
You smiled and said, "Just say it"
So here's my great ballet:
I don't know how to say this¡
But I'll say it anyway
I may not sound poetic
And I might get it all wrong
I trip over my sentences
Like jazz without a song
But listen through the fumbles
There's meaning in the gray
I don't know how to say this¡
But I'll say it anyway
It's not a sonnet or a speech
No perfect words in reach
But every beat my heart repeats
Says more than I can teach
So even if I mumble
And my voice begins to stray
If I talk too fast or blush too hard
Or just forget the day
Please know this clumsy message
Is honest, come what may
I love you. That's the sentence.
And I'll say it anyway.
I wrote it down a thousand times
Then tossed it in the bin
I practiced in the mirror
But forgot where to begin
You looked at me so kindly
I nearly lost my breath
