Beneath the tide lie stone steps of Zhaoxian Ferry
Southern Song boats moored here a thousand years ago
The willow where Yang Wanli tied his
boat bears its fourteenth new growth
The old ferryman says of the line
“Two cliffs stand wall-like and steep”
His great great grandfather pointed there long ago
Lu You arrived in the depth of autumn
River wind stirred his white beard as it blown
He said he’d passed Zhaoxian time and again in his life
Tonight he anchors not to press on or strive
But to hear the water of his hometown once more
Poetry is not mere history
It is the ferry that has waited a thousand years
For a reply that never came
The grace of Song lives here spanning a thousand years
Every line a letter home that never reached its sphere
The grace of Song lives here flowing toward tomorrow’s years
Zhaoxian’s stone steps lie low beneath the waves
yet high above all tears
Xin Qiji laid down his armor and came south
On Changshan Road he wrote of mountains’lofty truth
That early summer he thought he would march north once more
Then he watched the lights of Hangzhou’s city core
For twenty three years longing to the full
The grace of Song lives here spanning a thousand years
Every line a letter home that never reached its sphere
The grace of Song lives here flowing toward tomorrow’s years
Zhaoxian’s stone steps lie low beneath the waves
yet high above all tears

Someone sings Passing Zhaoxian Ferry in the hall
Post-00s hold up their phones in the crowd
In the light I see Yang Wanli’s boat proud
Sailing past the Second Bridge of Qiantang River
The grace of Song lives here
spanning a thousand years
Poets have aged but their verses still persevere
The grace of Song lives here
flowing toward tomorrow’s years
Zhaoxian’s stone steps wait beneath the water clear
For another pair of hands to tie the boat here
One ferry a thousand years;
the grace of Song forever endures
