Bottle and Bone
The whiskey bottle sits on the shelf
Just me and the glass and no one else
The amber liquid catches the light
Just like the memory of you tonight
I've been nursing this bottle for years
Watching the level drop through the tears
The same tears that fall every night
When the bottle's empty and I can't sleep
The glass is dirty the bottle's low
Just me and my ghosts in this joint we know
This apartment that's seen it all
The fights the tears the rise and fall
Of us of what we were
Of the love that turned to blur
To whiskey and regret
And the bones of what we forgot
I pour another glass make it strong
I drink to the memories right or wrong
To the way you looked that first night
To the way you left without a fight
The bones of our love are buried here
In this apartment in this whiskey
In the glasses that never get washed
In the morning hangovers I'm dismissed
The bottle's almost empty now
Just like the love we once had
We were full of promise full of hope
Now we're just bones and broken scope
I reach for the bottle again
But there's nothing left inside
Just like my heart
Just like the way you left me
With nothing but these bones
Of what we used to be
Just a skeleton of a love
That's been picked clean by memory
The sun is coming up
I've been here all night
Drinking to the memories
To the bones to the fight
I'll clean the glass tomorrow
Wash away the traces of tonight
But the bones will still be here
And the ghost will still be white
Dancing on the walls
Haunting these halls
Where you once stood
Where I once thought
We'd be forever
But forever was just a word
That slipped away from us
Like everything that I didn't deserve
The bottle's back on the shelf
Just waiting for tonight
When I'll pour another glass
And toast to what we lost
