Third Am Morning
The clock just struck three and I'm still awake
Lying here staring at the ceiling we've made
These walls have shrunk in the middle of the night
And the darkness is showing me things I don't want to see
I can hear the refrigerator humming
The same sound that used to play
When we were two people in this bed sleeping
Before the world drove us away
To opposite corners of this mattress
Where we lie in separate worlds
Two people who used to have
That's what has become of us
I roll over to face your back
You're breathing slow and even
But I'm not sleeping no I can't
Because my mind is on you even
The streetlight outside is casting stripes
Across the ceiling and the wall
Just like the memories and the rip tides
Of the love that's dying small
The dog next door barks at nothing
Just a sound in the night
Just like the thoughts that keep coming
That keep me up until first light
I've been lying here for hours
Watching the minutes crawl
Just counting the different
Of silence that's filled this hall
Since we stopped talking at dinner
Since we stopped kissing goodnight
Since every attempt got thinner
And thinner until it wasn't right
The shadows dance across your face
You look so peaceful in sleep
But I know there's no safe place
In the promises we couldn't keep
I reach out to touch your hair
But I pull back before I make contact
Because I'm afraid of what I'd feel there
Of the distance between us that's exact
So here's to the third am mornings
And here's to the silence too
Here's to the love that's still worth the trying
If I could just get through
To you in the morning
When the light comes again
I'll be waiting for the
That maybe we can begin
